Another question. My 08 535xi has a twin exhaust; only the left side of the pair seems to get used as its black with soot and the right tube clean as a whistle. Is this normal as my BMW dealer said there is a flap that controls this function? I ask because as in the first few months both tubes were equally black. Thanks Stephen.

I have the same problem. SA said that when its cold the car shuts off one of the tailpipes to warm up faster. I've been driving in Germany the past winter so his story seemed to make sense.
I've been driving in GA for about a month and I still don't see any exhaust stains on the other tailpipe. I'll give it a bit longer but I'm probably gonna bring it up again the next time I pay the dealership a visit.
Note: The car has a single exhaust - just two tailpipes coming out of the muffler. And yes there is some sort of EGR valve looking device tubed in to the tailpipe.
