All American makes have this as well, so it very common and therefore unlikely that a valet would not know to step on the brake to start. Now I didn't note the location of the original poster, so maybe it is different in Europe or elserwhere.

I too have found this as 'second nature' by now, BUT I still don't like the idea.
First of all, on a Steptronic, if they program it so that the car will only start in P, the pressing pedal is redundant.
In several situations, I find this very annoying. For example, a few months back when it was still boiling hot in HK, sometimes, I would ask my gf to go to the car to wait for me while I go do the last of the errands. She would literally be stuck in the car boiling up because for her to start the car, she would need to step on the pedal then start. in the 'old days' with my 540i, she just turns the key and viola, the magic of Air Conditioning.
Another OT annoyance of the E60, is the driver's side seat belt. I have NO problem wearing a seat belt whatsoever, but what if the driver is pregnant? there is no way to turn that warning sound off! so the E60 is pregnant unfriendly?????????????

[/quote]I have to disagree on this point...in the U.S. you are required to put your foot on the brake prior to shifting out of "park" but you are not required to push the brake to actually start the car

? it stated clearly on the left, usa 
. anyway, i drove diff cars here but none of them required this unique feature. not sure about other countries though .
