Howdy all. Long time listener, first time caller.
I have a 520d with the built-in HDD and a build date of July last year, so it's one of the last E60s.
As awesome a vehicle it is in almost every way, I have one major issue with it. I'm on the tall side (6'5") and when adjusting the seat/steering wheel for a comfortable drive, the stupid sports steering wheel blocks my view of the outer edge of the instrument cluster. For reasons mysterious, BMW designers decided to put the turn signal lights on the outside of the dials rather than between them so I can't see them. And to round it out, I can barely hear the indicator ticking above the stereo at even low volumes, and it takes minimal turn of the wheel to reset the turn signal. So in short, I'm often not sure what state the turn signal is in, which is a bit of a safety issue.
What I would love would be for the turn signal lights to come up on the HUD, which seems a logical place for them to be to begin with. In conversation with my dealer last week, he said he'd driven a number of E60s that had this feature. It seems it would require nothing more than a software update, but nobody in service or BMW head office had any clue or interest in the matter.
Is anyone aware of this feature and if it's possible to retrofit it?
The dealer said software updates can cost $AU800-1000. I don't much like the idea of laying this much out for what's essentially a bug fix. Has anyone had any experience with these sorts of negotiations?

I like to have this feature too. Maybe it is specific to the "m" series as they have different HUD options to chose from on the fly.

I feel your pain, I'm 6'3 and have the same issues. I have a HUD also and would love for this feature to work. I'll ask around my service dept the next time i'm in

Not available through any software updates as yet. Don't believe it will be either although BMW does surprise now and then. This is one of many little conveniences we have suggested through the years to be added to HUD. So far our success rate is ZERO
