Turbo Removal (GT2260V)
Hi All,
My 2005 530D has starting making a whistle sound when accelerating, you can hear the turbo spinning loudly from inside the car.
I took off the injet and can feel some play on the turbos rotors, there is no scraping that I can see and the movement is very slight.
But I have checked everywhere and cannot see any vacum or pressure leaks and the wastegate seems ok.
I want to try and remove the turbo to have it checked properly, has anyone done this and can they advise on whats involved, also I am happy to get any feedback on the issue is someone had a similar issue and hopefully it was not the turbo?
Basically car drives ok, but no real boost and when accelerating you can hear the turbo spinning and it sounds like rough bearings if you rev high, at idle you can hear nothing and with the inlet off the turbo on idle I can see the turbo spinning and it appears ok and no noise, only get it when driving and its very loud, and worring. There is a bit of movement on the spindle but not enough to have the turbo fins hit the wall.
Thanks in advance for all and any help...

I wouldn't touch it myself, but I'm no mechanic. I'd let the shop have a look.
The dealer wants the car for 2 days to "test" and at a cost of around ?120 per hour labour thats not an option.
A local garage said it would only take 2-3 hours for a DIY removal, when asked if they could do it the reply was yes, come back in 2 weeks, he was to busy to give some helpful points on how to remove as well
So if I can get it out myself and bring it in for testing it was save both a lot of money and also time.

True. Good luck.
Hi,
Can anyone confirm if they have slight movement on their turbos internal shaft so I can hopefully rule out the bearing, from what I can find the design is a floating setup so some movement is to be expected?
Thanks

All turbos have some radial movement ( up and down ) Very slight when moving with your fingers. There should be no axial movement ( back and forth ). Well there will be some but you should not be able to feel it with your hand. If you feel any your turbo is goosed.
Radial movement is hard to describe. It should move less than the thickness of a credit card.

My Ride: 2008 535i: June 6th start build, complete June 17th, at NY Port July 5th, at dealer July 10th, took delivery Friday July 13- Plantimum Bronze/Natural Brown Leather/Light Poplar, Sport Package, Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium Package, CWP & PDC. Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.
The turbos run up to 100,000 rpm and there should'nt be noticable play in the turbo. You don't mention the mileage or your maintenance history but if the turbo did not make noise before and it used to produce boost there are not many moving part to go wrong. If the waste gate is stuck open you would also have more noise and less boost too.
Sorry not many diesels here in the states yet.

Hi All,
Just wanted to update that the issue was infact the turbo.
I have since removed and replaced with a new one purchased from a UK supplier for £600.
The removal and fitting was anything but easy as I had only got the car on jack stands and you should ideally have access from under the car to get it out easier, you also need a full set of manifold, rocker cover and exhaust gaskets (ideally) to replace since you removing them all anyway.
Thanks for all and any replies.
