Thumbs up

Got the car back from the dealer and one of the items on their "to-do" list for me was the creaking seals...well they simply lubricated them and that lasted all of a day.

I read here that the direction from BMW to the dealers was now to replace the seals with a new part number and not lubricate them...anyone have info on that...anyone have something concrete from BMW stating that the new part is in fact the fix??

Have not seen a part number, but every month, BMW sends a video/DVD to all the dealers called the Roundtable. It is engineers/technicians discussing problems w/ various models and how to fix them. My SA saw the Roundel several months ago that told dealers to stop lubricating the door seals and to wait because new seals were being designed. Just a few weeks ago (May Roundtable I guess) the new video indicated that the new seals were now available in North America. I recall that the part number was the same as the old seal, but the new ones had yellow dots on them. Tell your dealer/SA to watch the Roundtable videos that are sent. You'd think they'd want to watch to better understand the product they are servicing, but I guess not!

Mine is in right now for the same problem. I did what kscarrol recommended. I actually made a list to take to the dealer and printed it out. I listed door seals, stated that they had already been in once before for this issue, BMW knows it is an issue, they have a round table DVD addressing the issue, and the fix is to replace the door seals with the new ones. I also stated that if the dealer had any questions to what I was making reference, to please contact BMWNA. The only problem, is that they have been on order now for about a week. Hope this helps.

I brought my car in today for the door seal problem and the service foreman was very familiar with the issue, pointing out which felt door seal needs to be replaced (the one on the top of the door - standing with the door open between the door and the car, look straight down on the top of the door, and you will see a felt strip running along the top of the door facing up).

I have a copy of the service bulletin, dated June 2005, which calls for replacement of all 4 seals upon complaint and says not to use carbaflow on the new seals. It's in my car now and I will try to post it (or at least the bulletin number) tomorrow. The tech said the new seals are thicker now.

OK. The Bulletin is number SI B 51 02 05 (Body Equipment) and it's dated June 2005. Subject is "Squeaking Noise from Door Frame Area while Driving." It applies to E60s manufactured up to Jan. 2005.

The fix is replacement of all 4 door seals. The improved seals can be recognized by the words "EPDM+Polyesterflock" and a yellow dot on the bottom of the seal (the yellow dot is temporary, until the old stock is exhausted).

Part numbers are:

51 21 7 057 507 (Left front)
51 21 7 057 508 (Right front)
51 21 7 057 509 (Left rear)
51 21 7 057 510 (Right rear)

Hope this helps.

As an interim step, while I am waiting for the new seals to come in, I sprayed my top door seals with 303 Aerospace protectant and the squeaks vanished. I had tried this a number of times before, with no success, but that was because I was spraying the wrong seals. It's the seals on the top of the window frame that you have to spray.

You have just posted one of the E60 holy-grails

Many thanks - now I have something to go back to my dealer with - who failed to find the new seals last time my car was in.

Could someone post this bulletin? SI B 51 02 05. Dealer would deny to do the work unless we hand them this paper.

Thanks.

I am personally not convinced the new seals fix the problem. I had the car in and they could only replace 3 out of 4 (run on the new seals). No joy - squeaks.

Went in again after a lot of complaint. Replaced all 4. Week later, squeaks.
Dealer escalated to BMW.
BMW said they should not have lubricated the new seals. Replace them.

Back we go to dealer, 4 new new seals again.

I'd say about 4-5 weeks on I can still hear the squeaks sometimes, but as the weather is hotter less often.

you sure your dealer fitted the "new" seals and is not just fobbing you off with a new set of the "old" ones?

since I had the new ones fitted with part numbers posted above have not heard a peep from any of the doors.......heard plenty from the damn parcel shelf but thats another story
