Default Trunk won't open with remote or trunk button inside

Need some help. I purchased my 2005 545i a few weeks ago (previously had 2001 330i) The key remote works fine with the door locks, but won't open the trunk. If I hold the button down an extended time it sets off the alarm. Also neither the trunk control above hood latch on kick panel and the switch under the logo button on trunk lid work. When I push either of these I hear a light "click" noise but no action at the trunk latch. I have made sure the trunk lock is vertical and not turned to the right and horizontal. Any ideas??????

Most likely you have a short in the wiring that runs from the trunk into the trunk lid. Open the trunk with the key and look for the harness entering the lid of the trunk. It is on the passenger side. There's a rubber grommet that protects the wires. If you remove the grommet and the insulating tape from around the wires then you'll most likely find some faulty insulation or even broken wires. You'll have to repair each wire with a crimp connector and heat-shrink tape.

txag 530i I believe is on track. Check the point of entry on the conduit where the wires for the trunk lid travel is is at that point that you may find a broken wire due to flexing with the lid opening and closing.

That is what happened to my 05 545. Easy fix.

As expected the brown wire was broken and 2 others had worn insulation down to the wire. I used crimp connectors to splice then covered with tubing. Unfortunately nothing has changed with trunk operation. Still the same issues. I also noticed the trunk light doesn't work. I don't think that's a new occurrence just didn't think to mention it earlier.
Any ideas?

I just fixed these wires yesterday , but my license plate lite was my issue . There are two grey wires with a brown strip , one of them is to the latch, and the other is to the left license plate light . Most likely it's still cut and possible you missed the area of damage on the wire . I soldered the wires and shrink tubes .

You have to look at every wire down the line. I think everyone who has a BMW that old has had some type of wire issue. Be it headlights or trunk. Be patient and track it down it is more than likely your issue.

I have the exact same issue, with the remote not working, i almost wondered if it was some kind of covert panic alarm! Luckily my kick panel button works (for now) so i just stick to that.

Follow up: Well I followed every wire and found one other with worn insulation that took a magnifying glass to see. But still no fire at the trunk. Is there a fuse? if so, which one(s)?
