really strange.
it just happened - cannot pop the trunk lid with the in vehicle button & cannot open the lid with the manual release on the trunk lid itself.
only way to open trunk is with key fob.

Did you lock your trunk using the keyhole on the trunk.

and the wife (who usually messes things up) was no where near the car.

If I committed a crime I would fled the scene too
Seriously did you check to see if you have locked your trunk with the key? Since you can open it using the key fob, the system should be working and judging from the evidence I think you might've locked your trunk. If not than the dealer have to fix this.

thanks. just tried it. trunk not locked - key hole is VERTICAL - looks like a visit to the dealer.

Again, I can't try this right now but I think that's the way it was on my previous cars.
It sure sounds like the trunk is locked with the key...

thanks rudy - just walked to my car to check it out again - the key lock can be turned clockwise to horizontal from vertical & counter-clockwise from horizontal to vertical only
in both positions - the only way to open my trunk is to use the key fob.

Thanks for clarifying -- I couldn't remember how it worked since I never use the key in the lock.
On my E39, I had a problem that was similar to this and the culprit ended up being the rubber boot that's located in the recess above the license plate. (The rubber "pad" that you press with your fingers when you try to open the trunk from the outside.)
It seems that the pad was pressed too hard and was stuck holding down the microswitch that is underneath the rubber. All I had to do was play with the pad to get the edges seated back into the hole properly. (I can't figure out how to describe it better -- sorry!)
You may want to peek up into that area and see if the rubber is seated all the way around the hole properly...
