6 months ago or so, my trunk on an 06 530 xi stopped opening when using the manual latch in the back. It does respond to the remote control command. (It also does not open when using the manual switch in the car)
Any guidance before I spent big money at the stealer.

Was the valet function accidentally turned on?

Did you check if your trunk key hole is on valet mode(key hole on horinzontal position)? If it is, turn it to vertical position.

In valet mode it would only open with the mechanical key inserted into the lock - not the remote control; the valet would have the remote control in order to drive the car.

This may be true on the 2006 and newer models but not on the earlier models. On the earlier models there is a separate valet key that is to be given to the Valet. My 2004 remote will open remotely the trunk with the trunk manually locked. And because the op's car is a Canada model, this my apply to him as well.

got cha... since OP is talking about an 06 you think there could be one of those specific build date's where the functionality switched? maybe he has what you described but the car is still considered an '06?

I 'think' it would depend on the key the OP has. if it is this one...

trunk only opens via the remote-0405key.jpg

then the remote will open the trunk when the trunk is locked. Give the valet the Valet key '2' only if you have this version.

If he has this one...

trunk only opens via the remote-06key.jpg

then the remote will not open the trunk. remove the removable hard key from the remote before giving the remote to the Valet.

It doesn't matter what year model, for as long as the trunk key hole is horizontal position, the trunk can only be opened by remote. The trunk latch and inside the car switch won't work,

This is what I thought too but the way it is written in the manual says...

for 2004

trunk only opens via the remote-2004trunk.jpg

For 2006

trunk only opens via the remote-06trunk.jpg

for 2004

For 2006

On 2006 and up(with key fob). The side of the keyfob corner, you can pull out the integrated key. When doing a valet parking, give the fob without the integrated key.
