Thanks everyone for the info on this. My E60 4dr boot started not working intermittently for a few days and then stopped completely. Luckily I found this post and similar ones. Discovered that the brown wire in the harness running through the boot tube was broken...

 

This issue is happening with me but I'm not sure what to do to fix it, please help ?

I spliced in about 6" of spare brown 16/18 gauge copper wire that I had laying around in the garage. I used (2) 16-22AWG butt splice connectors to splice the wire in line and connect it on both ends and crimped them on with pliers. I then wrapped the connections with black electrical tape and then re-wrapped the wire bundle/harness so it looked semi-professional.

If you don't already have this stuff laying around your house; butt connectors, electrical tape, and 12" of wire should run you about $5-10 at Lowes or Home Depot.

 

As far as you could tell, did the wires get pinched somewhere or did the insulation just bust open from fatigue?

 

In my personal opinion, I think it was a combination of chafing and taught pressure on the wire harness - especially since my trunk opens very fast.

Something I do find strange is that it seems to be the brown ground wire that is breaking in all of our cases; even though there are several wires in that harness/group. Maybe there was some type of quality control issue with that brown wire or coating from the factory?

 

Yea, my trunk really pops open fast too. I should probably take a look sometime.
