I use two of the small plastic totes that fold up when not in use. One has my emergency kit, tool box, fire extinguisher and small blanket. The other has reusable grocery bags. Both are simple to remove and sit up against the back seat. I also turned the mat over and installed a trunk tray from my old 325i wagon. In the past I've also used worn out rubber mats to protect the trunk and prevent sliding.

I have a small shop vacuum (for computer cleaning), my computer tools, car detailing accessories (for unexpected bird doo doo and window glare), a compact tire pump, and a few other miscellaneous items.
