I read somewhere on here that total BMW has run an article this month on the swirl flaps, the web site also suggests this "we?ve tackled the urban myth surrounding the infamous diesel manifold flap scare stories this month", has anyone got a copy and read the article (i tried to get one today and the shop didn't sell it ).

I bought the magazine, they show you how to replace the flaps with the caps that pmw sell though the article doesnt go in to that much detail. They mention that the updated design flaps dont break but they do mention that some specialist claim to have seen breakages. Its a good sales article for PMW and the blanking caps they sell, I am just disappionted that PMW they dont make these plates for the updated design manifold, i guess we just need to wait a few years for them to start breaking before someone will make blanking caps.

Cheers Bob,

Has anyone got a photograph of the 'old' smaller flaps, it would be interesting to compare the two designs and see what has changed (materials, sizes connections).

The axle shaft is dia. 4.5 instead of 4.0 and the flaps have a rubber coat. There are some pics on here somwhere, im sure a search would find them. Might have been Anzafins original manifold cleaning post i have seen them. Will have a search later if not found.

Cheers Rob,

I think i'll be leaving them in place for the time being, I've serched and not found any 'first hand' reports of issues with the 4.5mm shaft, if anyone has heard, and has a link, please post.

Conversation via e-mail with Peter from PMW...

I own a 2006 520D with a M47TD20 engine. I was reading Total BMW this month and wanted to carry out the removal of the swirl flaps to prevent any possible damage (if any). They recommend your aluminium billets at ?14 inc VAT per set. Could you tell me how to order a full engine set so I can carry out the work please. Thank in advance - Craig
Hi Craig,
Thanks for your enquiry. If your vehicle is a 2006 model you do not need to do anything. The effected vehicles according to BMW parts information are up to June/July 2005, however we have seen that most 2004 vehicles are already modified from factory. We always recommend an inspection if in any doubt??

Kind Regards
Peter Mould

I would love you to check the car over Peter but unfortunately I live in Belfast these days so its a bit of a trek. The engine is M47T2 off the key reading this morning at the dealers (in for some warrenty work). The car being made 11/2006.
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Good luck with all your work there at PMW.

Based on this topic I decided to clean the EGR valve yesterday. Total job (removal, cleaning, installation) to about 1 hour.
The valve was actually in a better shape than I expected with 120K km's on the car.

I did a bit of cleaning but there wasn't any real need.

So basically I can recomment anybody to do this check as it is an easy job.

**sorry for highjacking your topic Bob...**
Hi here what model e60 have you got. i tried invain to get my egr valve out. couldn't get to all the torq bolts, 3 off or the 4 allen bolts. it didnot look that bad so just put all back togerther. 530d mine is.

I enquired abouth these blanking plates a few weeks ago, I knew I had the uprated flaps and when I mentioned this was informed they don't fail and
don't need removing. I thanked them for the info. and removed them anyway
People keep reporting new vehicles are also failing, I don't know if this is true but I decided not to take any chances.

Jason

P.S. I've seen the old type flaps and they are much weaker than the uprated ones.
