Y'all look at the Vector 2 Amp Float Mode Maintainer VEC080. Is the mfg model of the Black and Decker charger on luigi's post #2.

I got it on line for $19.99 + $7.95 S&H. >> $27.94

Very compact. It is ax 1" x 2.5" X 5".

Got it from, InvertersRUs

Guys, remeber, the post says trickle charger but that's not what you want to use. A trickle charger provides a CONSTANT charge where a smart charger only chrages when it "senses" the voltage drop below 12V. A good Smart Charger or Battery Tender is what you are looking for. I use these on all my off road toys and they are the best.

One of the BEST ones out there are the TecMate Optimate III http://www.optimate-sp.com/ . The Optimate can even recover and fix dead batteries from as low as 2V.

It looks identical ... probably manufactured by B&D for Vector. The zip ties are a good idea. What did we do before velcro, zip ties, and post it notes came along

Yikes, CWS, the feds must have read your post. One just knocked on my door. I shot him (with my Glock 27 if anyone cares!)

Here are some pic of the installation of my charger.

Do you have a pic of how the hardwired connector is connected to the battery? Is there a post or something to attach the rings? I've never dismantled the trunk to look at the battery.

Why complicate things. Just use the alligator clips.

Open hood and locate jumper terminals.

close hood and plug charger. I put note on seat or dash to remove setup before driving the car.

Yes, these are the best pics of the connection. The output cable from the charger comes down from the upper left and splits about midway over the battery. The positve connects to the battery post as does the negative. It would have been easier to connect the negative (ground) to the left battery clamp down clamp screw, but I didn't see that until I was done.

Once you pop the covers off the posts you will see convenient posts to connect to. But I suggest connecting to the clamp down screw for the negative.

Just wanted to share my experience with this issue.

I have a 08 550i and 2 or 3 times since I have owned the car (4 months) I have gotten the "Increased Battery Discharge" message upon start-up. The time, MPG and a few other things were zeroized every time.

I brought it into the dealer on Fri and they kept the car overnight to check it out. They showed me a report saying that there was a time when the car was not driven for 10 days. This is true as I was on a business trip. They said the battery lost some charge over this time and that is why I have been getting the errors lately.

The first time I got this error I was simply washing the car for less than 1 hour and I guess the car didn't go to "sleep."

Anyways, they tried to sell me some sort of charger to plug in when I am not going to drive the car for a few days. It seems a bit ridiculous that the battery on a car with a sticker price of 76k would need to be charged is left to sit for a few days. My previous cars could sit months and still start up without issue.

Anyways, I'm sure this issue will be back for me. I am always out of town, sometimes for months, for business. I can have the wife drive it once every few days, but who wants their wife driving their BMW? Not me.

I guess I will ask the dealer to provide me with the charger if it continues to happen. Not sure how that will go over.

Hi all

have done a search and come up with this thread where I have had the same issues. I have already upgraded the battery via the dealer to an AGM(?) heavy duty etc. The dealer found a fault in the idrive display that was waking the car up, but here we are after a few short months and I am back to getting the symptoms again. It goes in for more checking when I get back from being away next week, but seeing that my problem is the daily short trips, I am wondering if there is any way I can track down a better/bigger/stronger/faster (sorry- got sidetracked) alternator?

I have the 540 V8 in Australia. has anyone found out if this is actually possible?

Cheers

J

PS... we are also just starting the same process on the E70 X5 as we have been informed the alternator charge to the battery is only around 10% of output due to the number of systems....
