This thread is definitely split across age with some exceptions. Just my observation. Personally, I've never abused any rental but I don't knock those that like to some fun.

Demos are there so that customer can test every aspect of the car before they buy it or do it on their own car.

When I went test driving with the salesman I do hard breaking and turning to see if the car can withstand it as they were told and the salesman have no problem with it, as long as you tell them before hand. I once test drove a mini and the saleman say "give it a little more gas come on" and I am already pushing the car like way over the limit.

It doesn't matter, i was just trying to share some information and apprently shared too much.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and thats cool. If my use of the demo/loaner offended someone, for that I apologize. For those who thought my information was interesting and useful great, glad i can be of service.

Like i said, I did these things while on my normal route, just drove the car harder than usual. Not like I am stopping the car just to do launches over and over again. Anyway, I regret sharing this information and request that this topic be left as it is....

My apologies to all.

By the way, I will still host the Chicago area greet at my restaurant for those who are still interested.

But please, don't lay down rubber on my parking lot... i wouldn't want anyone to abuse my asphalt
that last line was a joke people, please do not start another bash Dawyeah thread.

Peace

So for what it's worth, I will honestly say that I drive the BMW loaners *harder* than my own car. This has a lot to do with the fact that I want to experiment on a car that isn't mine.

Does that make me bad? I'm sure to some; however, anyone buying a used BMW has to be aware of the fact that it may have been "tested".

I'm not looking to argue here. Just providing another data point.

No apology necessary Dawyeah. I know a lot of people who have "fun" with loaners/rentals and I understand that many people do so (which is why I'd never buy a loaner or demo). I think what's going on here is that we all have different definitions of what's "fun".

In my mind, there's a difference between spirited or hard driving and outright abuse. I have fun and drive my car hard almost every day but it's likely not beyond what a BMW engineer (or salesman) would say is abusive. If I have a loaner, I won't change my style of driving and "baby it" but I won't cross that line and do anything that could either damage it or significantly shorten the life of any components.

Whatever you choose, have fun!

Here's my theory:

I drive loaners hard, but not recklessly.

If you don't want me to drive your loaner hard, sell me a car that doesn't break every month.

Stop giving me loaners, and I'll buy a luxury car from someone who will.

Then again, maybe it's just that I love cars too much to abuse them...
I love to drive my car. Infact I started driving it harder with no effort to conserve fuel as I realized that that is want it needs when I don't get a chance to open it up in a week.

There is a difference between driving hard and abusing a car.

SMGs and manual 550s are very hard to find. I am surprised that any dealer is giving one out as a loaner.

I agree...

The only time I've ever driven my car with an effort to save fuel was when the miles to empty indicator was showing "----" (and I actually had to do that yesterday!)

Original trick #1 for those who missed it:

http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=27147

Well... I get my 550 back this afternoon so i decided to abuse the loaner (demo) one more time last night...

Here is what you do:

1. Get up to 40-50 MPH leave in second gear.
2. Pop the SMG into Neutral
3. Coast to about 35-38 MPH
4. Gun it and put SMG back into gear.

Result: Spinning the wheels for a second while cruising and then tearing off into the sunset while others give you a thumbs up when they finally catch.

SMG = Super fun when its not your own car.... but at least you know things can be done in case you need it.

Back to grandma driving in my own car later.. BTW, had the aero kit put on, new 20" kicks and will be posting pics if the weather allows.

Enjoy!
