I get the slam or hard shift in 3 to 4 only while I'm in DS mode. Other gear shifts are smooth. "Manual" works fine. Regular D mode smooth.

Thanks guys, it mostly happens in DS mode for me now, D is fine and shifting myself is fine. Also playing around a bit I found I have a rattle or a grind (probably rattle) at about 2300 rpms. I'm going to bring that up as well when I speak to the dealership's Customer Relations Manager on Monday. Hopefully between that and two techs actually feeling it, it'll be enough to get something done.

I am fully convinced that you can achieve smoother shifts through every gear in manual mode. That's why I am always hanging around in manual mode. When I am in D, the shifts are a little jumpy sometimes but still very smooth with the right throttle input. You get a feel for where the throttle needs to be when you feel the car is about to shift.
I am also in manual mode 80-90% of the time. I like to keep the engine on the boil in the heart of its powerband -- which is not down at low rpms. The 550's engine needs to be revved to wring maximum performance from it.

What exactly is the difference between D or DS mode? Does one of the modes stay in lower gears generally? My IS350 in Sport mode will shift a lot harder and downshift much more than regular drive -- is the BMW the same concept?

I'm new to my 2006 550i and it has tranny slam between 1st and 2nd gear, both in D and DS modes. I've never driven another BMW auto, so I can't tell if it's normal or not. It's much smoother if I barely press the gas.

DS mode is the sport mode. In this mode, it holds the gears much longer and revs a lot higher. D is the regular mode and upshifts much quicker to maximum fuel economy. D is not for max performance. It makes the 550i Sport feel slow and lazy -- it is a luxury mode.

My 2009's Step shifts very smoothly with no slam.

Ok, so Sport will go to higher RPMs if needed... Do you know if sport tends to shift harder, and also downshift more often (during braking)? Also, do both modes 'learn' driving style, or just sport?

Yes, as a matter of fact I was told by the dealer's foreman that DS mode will not shift as smooth as the regular D mode. He went on to explain about gear ratio, timing etc, but unfortunately it was all lost on me. All I know is that the tranny has been silky smooth since the replacement and I have no intention of putting it in DS mode and possibly screwing up the smooth shifting in D mode again.

Good to know. How did you know that it actually needed replacement for sure? I have 38k miles and I'm a few months away from my warranty expriring. Taking it in this week for tranny slam for the second time, after last time they said they reprogramed the iDrive to help. How did you talk them into replacing the tranny, as it sounds that yours is much smoother than mine...
