Hey All,

Time to beat the dead horse again. Little back story. 06 550i STEP Auto Tranny - 41k miles.

First Trip: Went in for tranmission slam, tech confirmed slam, SIP Released in April applied (newest one to address the issue), slam came back in full force (ie feels like you've been rear ended).

Second Trip: Took it in again, tech was unable to confirm slam. Reset trick performed. Came back but not as harsh (don't feel like I've been rear ended).

Third Trip: Took it in again, Jr. Tech was able to confirm slam. They checked tranmission lines for bubbles etc, still slammed. PUMA case was opened and I was asked to bring the car back and leave it overnight so they could collect samples of the fluid. Dropped it off. Master Tech and Quality Control Tech both drove it twice that next day and both said the shifts were "Flawless". All adaptive values were reset during this period.

So I went from having a PUMA case opened to replace the transmission, back to square one.

I picked up the car yesterday and while it really isn't as harsh (doesn't cause my head to snap back), there is still a kick intermittenly, usually from 2-3 and 3-4 whereas some gears you can't even feel the shift.

So my question is how smooth are your shifts with your STEP Tranny? Am I now overly sensetive to the kick due to the harsher kick before and the fact that I'm really looking for it to happen?

Also does anyone know if there is a way in software to completely disable the adaptive features of the transmission? Being that a reset does help makes me think its an issues with adaptive features.

Lastly anyone on these forums that feels they do not have the tranmission slam issue in the Central IL area (Peoria, Springfield, Bloomington/Normal, hell I'll come to Chicago if I have to) that would be willing to let me ride/drive thier vehicle or drive my vehicle so I have something to compare to?

Dennison BMW has alot of problems understanding what "intermittent" means! You would think that two techs at two seperate times confiming they felt the slam would be enough!

I appreciate any guidance or information.

I have been chasing this tranny slam problem for almost a 1 1/2 year now, every since I got the car. I finally called BMW NA Customer Relations and got a supervisor involved. I am waiting for the next visit by the district tech to stop by my dealer and my car will go in again. My car has been reprogrammed 4 different times because of tranny slam, it has never solved the problem.

I feel your Frustration, this is not what a $70k+ car should feel like. Hope that the district tech can finally get this problem resolved.

Same here. I'm just hoping it won't start again in a few years.

I am fully convinced that you can achieve smoother shifts through every gear in manual mode. That's why I am always hanging around in manual mode. When I am in D, the shifts are a little jumpy sometimes but still very smooth with the right throttle input. You get a feel for where the throttle needs to be when you feel the car is about to shift.

I am hoping thats what they will ultimately do, I refuse to live with the tranny slam at this point.
