Mine only does it when the car is cold. Once I've driven it for a while and it's warmed up, it will not do it.

You're lucky. I have an '08 also, and my tranny slams no matter how long I've driven it. It's one of the reasons the my next car may NOT be a BMW.

In October '09 BMW issued the third iteration of SIB 240308 to address the tranny slam. My dealer tried to fix the problem in my '08 E61 using the previous two versions of the bulletin to no avail. This third one fixed the problem by deactivating the neutral idle control. I have had no problems for the past two months. Here is a link to the updated SIB:

A temporary, but unsatisfactory, way to avoid the problem is to shift to DS when stopped if the car is cold.

Thumbs down

When I had this problem, I made myself difficult to deal with at the dealer as they only want you to go away and continue with their half-assed methods of repair! Ultimately I complained enough, to the right people and assertively, that they replaced my transmission and I have not had a transmission slam issue since! So be insistent and get the transmission they owe you!! Good Luck and keep us posted!

Did they replace it when you had original warranty or extended one?

Tx for the SIB -- my transmission reprogram was done prior to 10/09 so I will show this to them... Interestingly, I do think my problem occurs more frequently on a cold engine.....so this may be it...

As far as the transmission replacement - if they don't do this reprogram, I'm going to the service manager and then - to the dealer - and then - to BMW NA. This is only the beginning....

This is my experience also, so by the time I get to service they can't duplicate the problem and what's worse, they act like they have never heard of this problem.... thanks for the SIB nce61.

Excellent! I'll have to check my records, but I believe my car was in last prior to October. It looks like a phone call to schedule an appointment with the dealer is in order.

My dealer played with the software a couple of times. I then insisted to go on a ride with the shop foreman. The shop foreman then said that he knew exactly what that was. They did some sort of mechanical tests (no faults were recorded) and determined that I needed a new tranny. I have had my new tranny for almost a year and I am happy to report that my car shifts as smooth as velvet. Note: I never drive it in DS mode. DS mode will always shift harsh because it changes the points at which the trasmission shifts and the higher revs cause the tranny to slam or shift harshly.

I'm going to take the SIB to the dealer. In my case, the problem is intermittent which makes a 'drive' with the foreman/chief tech rather limited.... But since the SIB is out, we will see if this makes a difference...

Can someone explain what the SIB does? What's with the change in the idle control????
