transmission problem
when the engine is cold (first 5-10 minutes) the transmission keeps jumping between the gears, mostly when going about 45 mph it jumps between 4th and 5th gear constantly and it is really annoying. has anyone experienced a similar problem? i have an 04 525i with 26k miles (still under full warranty). please advise,

A) Turn your ingnition key to first position (where power comes on but engine is not started)
Press the accelerator peddle to the floor and hold it there for 25 secondsC) Release peddle, turn off car
D) Start the car and go for a drive
Should be very smooth, it worked for me.

thanks for the input guys. i think the dealer is trying to screw me. they claim they have not experienced the proble while driving it (either b.s. or they didnt go constant speed of 40 mph like i told them). then they told me i should warm the car up first before putting it into gear????? do you have any advise on what to do if they say they cant find anything wrong with it? thanks for your help.

ason, can you give us your year/model/location. You'll get more specific replies that way.
sorry....
its a 2004 525i. 26k miles, located in houston texas.... everything on the car is standard, no major oprions etc.
I am going to try the reset suggested below. I experience what i call "bobble" like those bobble head dolls. at slower speeds and in between gear auto shifting on my automatic I sense a shaky, lurchy, subtle bobble effect. it seems like it is the suspension but also could be the tranny. the dealer drove it and said it was all normal. Of course i drive 3000 miles a month and love the car but kind of yearn fro the firmer ride of my old E39. It never had this little bobbley shaky body roll. Anyone else know what I am describing? Thnaks!

Try re-setting your adaptive transmission, there are a couple of threads on here that speak to this.
A) Turn your ingnition key to first position (where power comes on but engine is not started)
Press the accelerator peddle to the floor and hold it there for 25 seconds
C) Release peddle, turn off car
D) Start the car and go for a drive
Should be very smooth, it worked for me.

The car has all the sensors to tell the DME what to do... you should not have to warm the car before putting it in gear. Anyway... I do drive a little gentler when the car is cold.
