Default Transmission problem

I have an e60 2006 550i. It shows a transmission failure message, it was taken to a dealership and they said I would have to replace the transmission but I think that's not the whole story I have read online that the only thing the dealership tells you is the transmission is gone and you will have to replace it. If you guys have any advice or tips with the Zf6hp26 transmission that would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

Definitely get a second opinion, preferably from a respected indie that knows BMWs. Is the car driveable?

The car will go into reverse but will not shift to drive forward when I was loading it onto a trailer I was in reverse halfway up the ramps and it just stopped and wouldn't go backwards again. I just thought that if it would go in reverse then there might be a better and/or cheaper solution to the problem.
