My Ride: 2004 Metallic Silver 530i - Angel eyes - HID 8000k Fog lights - 20" Zenetti Rogue (flat black with chrome lip)

Okay let me first list the problems that I was experiencing with my 2004 530i (94,000 miles) with increasing frequency.

1. The car, when I came to a stop would make a slight jerk/jolt after I had made a complete stop. As if I had made a stop in 2nd gear and after I had stopped, it shifted to first gear. It made it hard to come to a complete stop smoothly.
2. If I drive over 1,500 to 2,000 RPM, the car would shift roughly. It would feel like a rocking chair that was mentioned by some of the members on the forum.
3. There has been times (occurring more and more) when I accelerated slightly past 2,500 to 3,000 RPM to pass someone and as it shifts up a gear, there sounds/feels like gear grinding. The same effect as if you didnt push the cluth in all the way and shift gears in a manual car.

When I first experienced rougher shifting, I took it to Irvine BMW during summertime and they said it was because I had a leak and was low on transmission fluid and that it shouldnt be a problem. They refilled the transmission fluid and they sent me on my way. The symptoms seemed to have gone away for a bit, but recently, my car started acting up again. I dont know if it was the cold weather lately, but the problems seemed to get worse daily. I couldnt take it anymore so I took it into an independent shop friday afternoon. They called me back today and they told me that the transmission mounts had worn out and that it was the cause of my early, late, and miss shifts. The guy at the shop said he is going to send the transmission out to someone that specializes in transmission in order to verify that it was the transmission mounts. He told me that it would be anywhere from $4,000 to $6,000 to fix .

I was just curious to see if anyone else with a E60 had run into problems with their transmission or if anyone would know why I was having this problem. I am probably going to have to wait til monday/tuesday to get a complete diagnosis and then another 2 or 3 days before it can actually get fixed.

Yes,, Hello

Mine has the bump from 2 to 1 also. shifting is rough in gears 1 2 and 3. usually its ok during acceleration but when slowing down.. its very jerky.
I already had the mechatronic replaced but it didnt resolve much. My guess is you should begin with replacing it too instead of taking out the whole box.

By the way, mine seems to work better when the car is cold or has driven a while in the lock-up. I am thinking the torque converter is getting hot and then not working properly... but this is just a guess, i'm no mechanic

HOW MUCH FOR MOUNTS ??? When you say "transmission specialists" I think AAMCO :-( Probably ok for a Chevy but IMHO BMWs require BMW Specialists.

RUN AWAY!!

The last time I had A BMW Rebuilt transmission completely installed it cost me less than that (ok that car was a 2001 740i Sport); And because the car was only 6 years old with less than 100K miles BMWNA picked up 50% of the parts cost (it was NOT a CPO Warranty claim).

So, unless there is clear evidence you abused the transmission of this car I'd start with straight talk with the service manager of the dealership you have a relationship with.

The thing about those mounts might be true. But I don't really believe it. You just can't "wear out" a ZF transmission under 150 000 miles if you're not on a race track every other day. Worn out mounts symptoms are typically vibrations and noise, NOT jerky or missed shifts.

Note that you should service your tranny every 65K miles.

1. Try to change the oil pan with new filter and gasket, have your transmission flushed completely including the torque converter and refilled with a new ZF LifeGuard 6 oil. About 9 liters but you need 7-8 more first to make a complete flush. About $600 total.

I just filled mine the standard way (no flush from the torque converter - about 6 liters only) and my tranny is now much smoother. No jerky 1/2nd gear finally.

2. If that won't help, find a ZF service in your area and give them a call. I would not let any "transmission specialists" touch it except for an authorized ZF service. Transmissions are very complicated.

In any case, mounts replacement should not be expensive at all. $400 with labor in a non-stealer service (can be done within 1 hour).

I just don't feel comfortable going to the BMW dealership in my area (Irvine BMW) because everytime I go there, they treat me like shit seeing that I'm only 21 and they try to charge me outrageous prices for everything. Im going to wait and see what they say about my transmission and then I'll talk to them about it. Until then... I'm carless. Even the service manager at the shop told me that its not normal to see a e60 with less than 100k miles having these problems.

Does anyone in the southern california area know of a independent shop that specializes in bmw/dealer that does a great job with services and gives good customer service?

Pretty sure you have a problem with your Mechatronics unit. This has been well documented with the ZF transmission.

Thank you amit1947. They just dropped of the car to a transmission specialist at 11 in the afternoon so I'm waiting on their diagnosis. I'll keep you guys posted.
