I found info on this quite difficult to find so here is the problem and solution to this problem:

I have an automatic 2004 530i with 70,000 kms. Saw a small 4" puddle of slippery clearish brown fluid in my garage farther back than the hood so not an oil leak, almost under the transmission shifter so I figured it was a transmission leak and was correct.

I had 2 slow leaks in the transmission. The plastic underbody cover caught some and the rest leaked onto the floor.

1. Mechatronics sleeve leak. It was slowly leaking on the side of the transmission where the electrical connector goes in. I guess the two "o" rings wear after a while and crack or something.

2. Transmission oil pan leak from the gasket.

Fixes:

1. Replaced two "o" rings and rubber "sleeve"

2. They sell an oil pan "kit" which includes plastic oil pan, gasket/ "o" rings and drain plug

The repair was quoted $1320 Canadian from the Dealer. $1125. from independent shop. 4 hours labor quoted from both.

Parts/Labor Canadian $ Private Shop:
$400 4 Hours labor
$370 Transmission oil pan kit
$27 Trans electrical connector
$11 2 "o" rings
$172 for 7 litres transmission fluid (May as well flush it since they are draining it. You can get them to recycle your old fluid and save $172)
$144 for 24x$6each torque screws

I dealt the private shop down and ended up paying $950 for everything.

Apparently the plastic oil pan warps after a while from heat and wear tear etc. It leaks more if you dont drive it for a few days. Most shops will want to replace just the gasket not the pan which wont solve the problem as the warped pan caused the leaks. So make sure to replace gasket and pan. Also get them to use NEW hardware torque screws (24 of them times $6 each!) because they are supposed to be a one time use so dont reuse them.

Hope this helps people with this problem! My first post :)

For sure, the mechanic knew about it right away. Apparently the parts just get old, just glad I caught it before the actual transmission was dry and died or was on a long road trip or something!!

This topic was already talked about. Both leaks are common. I have the Mechatronics sleeve leak after I drain/fill the transmission fluid. Dealer replaced the sleeve for $$$$. My car was just out of warranty but I have the extended warranty. The repair was covered 100%.
