Default Transmission non Transmitting

My automatic transmission has been dying a slow, painful death. It started with very occasional transmission fault warnings, which were easily reset by shutting the car off and on. I have noticed harsh gear changes, and stuck/hung gear changes under sudden loads.

I've been driving moderately until I figure out what I want to do and when. Well, last night I had some major slippage, a sound that reminded me of belt screech, and then the wonderful failsafe lockup in 3rd gear. Shutting the car off and on didn't help after this. Nor did unplugging the battery, waiting 10 minutes, then reattaching. Still frozen.

I hooked it up to INPA and ran an error check. Unfortunately, my new INPA update put everything in German. I reset the errors, reset adaptation values, allowed the car to "sleep", then tried. The transmission was shifting again. Gonna have to check fluid levels and mechatronics solenoids. Fun

did you check the fluid level when it was acting up?
ever change the fluid and filter? sounds like its too late now though, although your problems before could have been due to something as simple as low fluid level.

Back in 2009, I had a transmission rear seal failure at 64,000 miles.

Transmission Seal Failure Thread

Under aftermarket warranty, Center BMW replaced the rear seal, fluids, filters, gaskets, and related. I should have changed the fluid at 140,000 miles (im at 180,000 now). I will have to check the fluid levels when I return to town on the 10th. I'll keep ya posted! I hope its not too late, especially considering its operating normally under light/moderate driving.
