Transmission Malfunction when wife/brother drives car
#21
Just found this:
P17EA Gear selection, 5-6 - control gear ratio
Wiring, selector lever position sensor, e / m switching control valves, mechanical failure PPC
p17ea bmw
Makes sense since this happens to the car around 80. Oddly it has never happened when i drive it, only when my wife or brother drove, which was verrrry rare. Perhaps I need a mechanic to reset the adaptive memory of the transmission? Maybe the new drivers are setting off some problem since the car isn't use to their driving styles.

It's possible. You could certainly try resetting adaptations, it can't hurt. I suspect that you, like everyone else with a modern ZF transmission, is experiencing the typical Mechatronic failure at or near 100K miles. It seems to be the achilles heel of these transmissions.

Man what a shame I tell ya. I hope that is all it is and not a complete transmission blown or soon to die. From what I've read a Mechatronic failure/solenoid is a lot better than needing a tranny rebuild, correct? Any idea what getting the Mechatronic replaced (sleeve?) costs these days?
Honestly, before you jump to that conclusion try resetting adaptations and see what that does. You could try doing another fluid replacement too. Just because BMW says they did it doesn't necessarily mean they put new fluid in. Dealers aren't as good as qualified independents in my opinion.
good luck with the car.

Thanks Kyle, I will do that first. Think it's a bad idea to drive it to a shop (maybe 10 miles) or should I tow. I know you don't know my vehicle, but it's not driving weird or any noticeable problems.
So I will get someone to do an INPA reset, I believe that is what it's called.
I still need to find out out however if that'll clear the check engine light from P0700 & P17ea. I haven't 'cleared' the code from my OBD device, but I'm assuming by clearing the code on OBD, it won't make the check engine light go away.

Unless your transmission is behaving very erratically or is losing fluid at an alarming rate, there should be no problem with driving it, especially for a short distance like 10 miles.
again, good luck with the car and please keep this thread updated. it helps anyone who might have similar issues at some point in the future.

Anyone with INPA, DIS, GT1, or any other type of BMW specific software will be able to clear all faults and reset adaptations. I use INPA mainly because I'm most comfortable using that software.

To add - I started the car and got a very noticeable smell of gasoline that I've never noticed before. I'm beginning to think the SES (check engine light) came on because some type of fuel issue or emissions problem. Boy oh boy.

BMW really needs to step it up in terms of reliability and cost of maintenance outside of the warranty period.

I encountered the same issue myself @ 115Km on my 2006 530I.
I had the exact same codes too. You should start driving your car in (D/S mode) I found that my fault light showed up less frequent. Also, you need to flush and change your Transmission Fluid.
Bmw gives you 2 options:
1) buy a new transmission from them ($7000-$9000)
2) bring your car to transmission specialist and have them rebuild your transmission (min $3500)
or if you are on a tight budget, this is what i did.
I was lucky to have a friend who worked in a shop and was willing to do the labor for me to flush and change my transmission fluid ( $500 ) and I bought a basic code reader/eraser ($150) to clear the fault codes. You should start driving in (D/S mode) and shift the gears manually. Its been about 6 months since my transmission Fluid change and @ 140Km now. My car has been actually driving good, 5 and 6th gear still slips a little, but the fault light does not show up as much, maybe 2-3 times with in the past 6 months. Been on long trips with it, driven from Vancouver, Canada down to Portland, Oregon. ( 5 hr road trip one way) and my car performed fine.
I hope I was of any help to you. Good Luck figuring it out!
