Transmission Malfunction
I have a 2005 545i. I have changed the filter and oil with ZF lifetime 6. Transmission feels and shifts ok sometime. When the problem does occur its between 3d and 4th gear. Feels like theres studder and then a hard shift to 4th and then the transmission malfunction warning comes. After shutting the car off it goes away, sometimes coming back and sometimes not. I got the error code P17E8, manufacturer control transmission. Can someone give some advice as to what to do. Thanks you so much in advance.

You can try an adaptive reset first.

I had something similar in my car and would get the trans malfunction also with no moving gears after the error.
Being under CPO, BMW replaced about 20K worth of stuff. New trans and everything electrically related to the transmission also, shifting, ecu, etc.
Sounds like your trans is toast!

Just over 193000 miles. I'll keep you posted.

Spoke to a couple of friends, they recommend you have the tranny rebuilt. Costs you less than a new one and they can put better parts in it. Just find a reliable place that fixes imports especially BMW and you're good.

had exactly the same problem, and after having the fluid changed first also it developed this issue.
I had the entire transmission remanufactured although I am still experiencing the same issue
I have been told the gearbox is now fixed but due to a faulty Light control module the adaptive learning process is being interrupted and the symptoms are still appearing.
anyone think this is right?

I can't say it is out of the realm of possibility, but I don't believe it. If they think the light control module is fault, why don't you disconnect them both and drive the car. What happens.
I would also says that if the problem developed after changing the fluid, perhaps the wrong fluid was used. Automatic transmissions are very picky about the fluid type.
