Transmission Maintenance Yes or No?
#1
I hate to start this debate, however in all of the threads that I have read, there was not a definitive answer. I know the dealer said that these are lifetime transmission and that you don't need to change the fluid, however I am really fearful of failure. My aunt e46 transmission pump failed, which killed the torque converter and now has to replace the transmission due to metal filing through the transmission. The damage is about $4500. I don't have that kind of dough laying around. I have an 04 525, with about 72K on the dial. Should I get the tranny serviced?

Depends on how long you're going to keep the car. I keep mine a long time, and so I do service the transmission (and many other components). Google up Mike Miller @ BMWCCA (or Bimmer Mag), email him, and he'll send you a pretty thoughtful analysis and suggested maintenance program, in contrast to the BMW Lifetime Fluids program.
