but isn't redline not an approved fluid? at least that's what I thought. Well that and the fact that I still have 2 cases of Mercon lying around in my garage.

Do you have a 550 or 535? Does it matter if your out of warranty?

I don't buy that lifetime talk I guess I'll get around to it soon

So I've got 82k on the clock and was thinking of getting the tranny fluid changed. I was at the dealer for a part last week and talked to the head tech for quite a while. I asked him about this 'lifetime fluid' theory and he said there's truth to it. He has an E39 with almost 300k on the clock and hasn't changed it yet.
He did mention that if you're going to change it to do so around 60k, that way the transmission 'memory' won't be disrupted. He was sort of saying that I'm a bit too far past the point, and that it really is lifetime fluid, but if I were to change it do it soon then every 80k miles.

I'm on the fence, but this thread has been helpful.

don't know what the difference between 60K and 80K really but transmission memory won't be disrupted, what the hell is he talking about. I wish I can erase my transmission memory permanently so I can get rid of the slam. Notice how when lots of us do that reset with the 30 seconds technique, it seems to work better but the tranny will go back to its old self eventually because of its "memory".

Also when they say "lifetime" fill the mean the life of the car which translates into 100,000 miles. Thats the term the dealer is on the hook for. BMW especially wouldnt do trans services like they do brake services or oil sevices. Look at the time involved to heat trans fill etc..they cant get as many out and waste factor and cost is higher.
