so the latest...the transmission fault appeared this morning at 7am and now won't go! The car is stuck in 3rd gear so i drove it 60 miles (40mph tops...painful) to a ZF box specialist. Let's hope they can spot the issue sharpish and get a reasonably priced fix. BMW offered to take it off my hands with an insulting offer so I don't know what my options are if the box can't be fixed. Who'd buy an E60 with a knackered box?!!

 

A remanf. gearbox costs $3500 here in the US.
Rebuild kit is around $260 and getting parts are not that difficult. Problem is finding someone who can fix it right.

got a call from ZF specialists, confirm the 4th to 5th gear slip, also an issue with the clutch. Have quoted £2100 all in for recon/rebuild, torque converter, oil and of course labour. They've ordered the parts, it'll take around a week to do! Guaranteed for 12k/12 months.

Only thing I need to consider now is whether I keep it, trade it in for a 320d to protect my money until I upgrade to the F10, or get an F10 now!!

Just spoke to BMW and they say that they would give me 2k more after the recon, so looking at it like that it makes sense to part ex it now...argh, too much to consider!!
