My Ride: Silver/Grey E60
Question

I'll make this short and sweet... Im driving home down a rather large hill and my e60 downshifts itself as usual and the TRANSMISSION FAILSAFE warning comes on. I have no idea what the heck caused it... my car is at the dealer as I type this. Any ideas guys? Is this a typical problem with the E60?

I have a 04 525i with auto tranny.

Thanks

PS. The worst part is my loaner is an x3! Good power for a small car though.

Damn that sucks.

I just had a new auto tranny installed a week ago at 42,000 miles. My car had been into the dealer 3 times for gear hunting issues before they finally replaced the whole transmission. They never said what exactly was wrong, they just said it had "internal issues". I too had a X3 3.0si as a loaner, even though I don't like the looks of the X3, I have to admit it drove very well.

Wow thats kinda scary... several transmission failures already from 2004 cars? auto transmissions are suppose to last longer than that...

X3 good for the girlfriend? Nah... 335Ci better.. or rather 135Ci... even the MINI Cooper S JCW

Yep its a little crazy, I know of at least one other member in a 2004 that also had his tranny replaced. My tranny has been working perfectly since they replaced it, "knock on wood". One more major problem with my car and I will consider to lemon the damn thing.

That sucks,

I had the same warning when the car had 700 Km, brand new, and now the transmission is loosing oil.
Now the car is for repair. They have the car for two weeks, and they are not telling me what the problem is.

Any suggestions?

What is your location Christos? Advice for this type of thing is very dependant on your country and even region.

My country is Cyprus, an island in the Meditteranean. My region is Europe.
I know that BMW's service differs depending on the region, but I can assure you that here is almost non existent.
They are not even replying to phone calls.
I am wondering how can I find out what the problem of my car is.
Twice this year, I parked the car for four days, when I left for a business trip and both times I found oil from the transmission below the car.
The first time they told me from the carage that it is a problem of a rubber part on the transmission and they changed it, and after 8 months the same problem happened again. This time they said that the transmission has a leakage from a weird position.

Did anyboby experiance the same problem?
