Beware, could be a cracked sump pan.

Happened to me and apparently a common yet not that widely know problem.

Sump pan on these is plastic and over time in some cases will crack. This then slowly bleeds out the tranny fluid to the point that the car detects a low fluid level and set it into 'limp home mode'. When you stop and re start the car it gives just enough time to the levels to settle and seem fine until it happens again.

Note, the undertrays mask this problem as you cant see the pan until you remove the trays and equally they catch most of the fluid so you probably wont see any oil patches on the drive.

My advice, get it to a garage immediately and drop the undertrays, it will be obvious if its leaking. Cost of repair around £600 (parts and labour), however driving like this for sometime will burn up the tranny fluid (eg goes a dark brown and smells burnt) and if so you could be into more major component failures so getting it checked asap would be prudent.

Hope this helps

Hi, I assume you were seeing oil on the ground? I don't have any leak. Had the car checked out...nothing.

Now I did the usual Google search and got a laundry list of what it could be...battery, Tranny need reset, etc.

Anyone had this problem and had a real solution to it? I hope the transmission is not bad....

Thanks
Thx
My transmission fault had been driving me insane, in sept I had to have a turbo replaced, the garage never informed me that I would need new gaskets and oil feed pipe. I hoped the new turbo would cure the fault but no, in December I had to replace the turbo yet again, however the turbo refurb guys were great and told me what I needed to get, but still transmission fault. Having bought the car secondhand I decided to do an oil and filter change, what can I say, the filter was caked in what I can only describe as hardened tar, so with oil and filter in I took the car for a drive, transmission fault always occurred on overtaking or going up hill, so keeping a safe distance I ascended up a steep two lane hill, put my foot to the floor and overtook the car in front and got up the hill with no transmission fault warning popping up, I have driven up every hill I can find and nothing, my next telling time is on the motorway, if it doesn't pop up a warning I will be pleased as punch I will no longer have to stay in the slow lane out of fear. So guys check your oil filter before bmw charge you a mortgage and all your limbs

Gurus,
My BMW 550i E60 is cranking but not starting.
I diagnosed it and i has the following errors.
1. AOB8 Hall sensor start/stop button ,key engaged
2. AOB 2 suppy terminal 30E, 30
3. AOB6 selector-lever interlock

Basically i got the gearbox removed and put back and the car has:
1. not been able to engage the gear lever after its switched on and brake step on.
2. cranking but not starting..plugs not sparking either
3. key not engaging nicely.

Please help urgently.

Please help.I have a 2005 545 that got the dreaded Transm failsafe. It was low on fluid so I filled it up but it didn't correct the issue. I replaced the battery and the failsafe don't go away. It will still go into reverse and drive in only 3rd gear. Even if I just turn the ignition without starting the car goes through its sequence and the failsafe pops on the dash. Would this mean that "hopefully" is just a loose wire or a dirty connection. Does it have to be reset with a scan tool or something?

First measure your system voltage with the car running across the jump terminal and ground lug under the hood (should be around 14.2V), although unless you are seeing other fault lights such as active steering warning, this is probably not the cause.

After that you might try a tran fluid drain and fill, and if still no luck then I would have an Indie read some error codes.

Indie should try resetting the adaptation, but if that doesn't work it usually starts to get expensive, like solenoid replacement or mechatronic unit replacement.

Good day everyone,

I am having similar issues as you guys, 2004 BMW 530i, 138,000 KM (85,000 miles).

I had the trans oil pan seal and filter replaced last week since there was a small leak from the seal.

Prior to this i noticed sometimes the transmission would shift really late from 3rd to 4th gear.

Just before I did the service, when driving on the highway and attempting to pass, when the car down shifted from 4th gear to 3rd it reved high and the transmission fault message came up.

When driving normally, car drives amazing, i am the second owner and the first owner had the car serviced at a local BMW dealership.

Now i am really afraid and hoping that it is not the transmission issue.

I have explained the issue to the private BMW specialist shop and we were both assuming that it could maybe be the low fluid level.

I ask you guys to send me a PM since i am not too familiar with finding these tread on the forum.

Here a video of the similar issue as mine and probably most of us:

Thank you all in your help,

Well it seems quite a few people are all having the same problems. When I purchased my car it had an oil leak and guess what a couple of days later I overtook a car on the motorway and bang transmission fail safe mode activated the car was stuck in 1st gear and wouldn't change at all. Even putting the car into manual mode it wouldn't change gear at all , best of it was I was near the services I packed the car up and got out, went to have some food and came back.. and started the car soon as I selected reverse NOTHING the failsafe came back on and it wouldn't select any gear .

After getting the car removed I sent it back to the garage they confirmed the sump had a hair line crack and was leaking oil, they replaced the pan and filter and filled her back up with oil.

Just after my warrenty ran out it happened again and again everytime I'm on the motorway over taking it happens. I'm slowly disliking the car day by day.

I am running out of ideas and hopeful some one will shed some light, I feel for you all above as it's really annoying, im going to take mine to Autolock a gearbox specialist next week so I'll keep everyone updated on what they report.
