i recently bought a 550i with 60k miles.
if i am accelerating from a stop, i ocassionaly hear a light noise coming from the direction of the shifter.(auto)
the sound isnt constant, and is only audible if the radio and heater is off, and windows closed. it kind of sounds like the vanos chain noise i've heard before in the e36 cars. i would say the noise is in relation to engine rpm, and doesnt occur in any specific gear, although the faster i go, road noise would overcome this particular sound if it occurs.
could it be a trans noise, or a vanos noise? should i be concerned?
the car drives nice otherwise. even if i floor it, she runs smooth, and the transmission shifts nice.

the sound seems to be coming from the shifter boot area. i wonder if some sound insulation might have moved or fallen off??

I don't think the V-8 has VANOS, since it has the valvetronic system.

Pieter

The V8 E60 uses both Valvetronic and Double-VANOS systems to provide the linear power delivery we enjoy so much...

VANOS

Valvetronic

i drove the car for a couple hours today. i didnt really hear anything, except for maybe once. the noise sounds kind of like a worn power steering pump.
the other day when i heard this noise more, i had the car weighted heavily with people and stuff. i wonder if the extra weight causes this noise.
anyways, its such a light sound when it does occur, that i'm not going to worry about it.

I have had a noise that is completely load (rpm) dependant. More so load however because it happens most in gear 1,2 and 3 and then dispears in 4th (albeit I dont see more than 5k rpms in 4th plus so I guess RPM dependant would be the same thing.

Mine is almost like a shuddering noise that only happens when I press the accelerator under load. Not there when just revving an engine at idle or anything. It is one of those things that a dealer can just never hear so until it gets a lot worse I will just live with it
