My Ride: Stock 2004 BMW 525i
Default Trans/diff question for '04 E60 525i

A few weeks ago I got into my car (drivers door still open) and put the car into reverse and heard the typical (not for BMW I thought) clunk from the diff. The car drives and shifts smoothly and I have not heard it since. The car has a tick over 87K miles on it and I am thinking that maybe the trans and diff fluids need to be changed? My first BMW so I am new to their inner workings one could say, I became unemployed not more than one month after purchasing the car so now I do not have the funding for even a simple oil/filter change at the moment. I am waiting for the dealer to open so I can ask for any/all service they performed, like a engine oil/filter change.

The shop I worked at can and will do the oil/filter change for me and I am thinking it would be a great opportunity, while the car is on the lift to do the trans fluids/filter kit from tctsc.com.

Thoughts?

yep, that's where i'd start too. also check the guibo (flex disc) on the driveshaft.

when you change the transmission fluid, make sure you follow the procedure outlined by ZF. there is plenty of literature out there, and a thorough DIY thread on this forum explaining how to do it correctly.

good luck

The shop I want to perform this maintenance, my former employer, is a maintenance/repair/performance shop dealing with everything from BMW's to McLarens and the owner is a former CART technician/mechanic so they have the knowledge and skill I just need the funds lol.

I do not remember the particulars but I think I had the parking brake engaged as well so possibly that was the cause of the thunk sound? I do not bother with the Sport Shift mode either and drive very relaxed (ie not abused).

Thanks for the reply,
Gregg
