Is this tranmission slam or something else?

Just to update...
Problem vanished a few days ago and despite my harshest driving this morning, I couldn't get the fault to appear for the BMW service technician sat in the passenger seat. They did their own tests and felt that the gearbox was not as smooth as it should be....checked oil level okay....reset all adaptions....programmed car with new software....
It took best part of five hours but the 'box is like silk now. (aside from the fault which vanished of its own accord, I already thought the box was like silk so that's an improvement!)

It seems that the software eventually cleared an incorrect adaptive control parameter. If it happens again, try the reset here: http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=40018
