I've already driven the new 2012 528s a couple of times. Over the road it's a decent driving car ... BUT ... there's no mistaking the buzziness of the 4cyl turbo motor. And at low speeds when you step into it, it sounds like a Honda or Toyota and there simply isn't any low-end punch. So as a replacement for a normally aspirated 6cyl BMW (a la 525/528/530) it misses the mark for me personally. As for normal fuel economy, if you look at real world numbers I'm thinking the 535 will be better than the 528 4cyl in smiles per gallon.

That said, similarly equipped the 535 will have a $3K - $4K premium ... but in 2-4 years I bet that the 535 will command higher resale value. So, it may be a wash looking down the road.

And, finally, this is one that still bemuses me ... so, I says to self - "SELF, you're looking to buy an "economical car" ... why would I even start with something that sells for $55K++ ?!?!" Silly, but it's true. Or how about when I shop around to save 4 cents on a gallon on Sunoco Ultra

 

This is so shockingly true . I got rid of my 2011 audi a4 with the 4 cylinder turbo because I was tired of the cheap sound that it produce. Just kills the luxury of what is left. I could careless about mpg anymore. My 550i is worth it everytime I step on the gas.

 

The weak sound of that 4 banger is definitely a problem. When the sales guy brought it to the front my wife and I were like wtf is that sound?? If you do buy the 528, just don't look under the hood. The engine looks like a lunch box.

535 or 550 with a kit is the only way I would want to go E60 to F10. I've only seen one that I've liked so far, and it had a kit and aftermarket wheels.
