I'm thinking of turning in my 04 545i for an 07 550i, I can get a reasonable deal with sports package but no active steering. I drove the car today and I was very impressed, I thought the stardard steering was quite nice. Anybody out there gone from active steering car to non active steering? Could use some advise on this topic. I love the compfort seats and thicker steering wheel, also new car would have navigation which I do not have now,
I test drove both. I prefer having more "feel" and therefore went without active steering. Lots of people love it. It is simply a matter of preference.

Just curious, how much damage to the pocket book was it going from a 545i to a 550i? Was performance one of the reason?

Thanks,

I could not justify an extra 35 hp for thousands - aside the mileage of course.
I'm not changing cars because of 35HP although I won't mind having it, the reasons are because I'm just not one 100% happy with my 545i anymore. The new seats are very nice which my 55 year old a__ won't mind, I have not finalized the deal yet but I'm hoping to do this without any out of pocket money and keep my lease payment in the low $800.00 range; I'll keep you updated.

AS takes away the real drivers feeling.
What's the basis for this statement? I drove a loaner without AS and can say say unequivocally that AS has absolutely no effect on "road feel." If you really want to feel the road, don't get power steering.

AS is a godsend if you do any amount of urban driving and parking whatsoever. If you have no tight turns to deal with, then I'd agree its benefits are minimal.

I used to think that AS affected the feel of the weight of the steering in my 550. But now that my AS is not working I have revised my thinking. My 540 sport had a heavier feel, but now a doubt that AS is the reason for a slightly lighter steering in the 550. It must be the servtronic or whatever they call it. The steering weight or assist feels the same with AS malfunctioning as when it is working.

Huh? sorry... but are you saying that Active steering doenst affect the weight of the steering feel?

So steering weight and directness is the same with or without AS and the only difference is turns to lock at low speed?

If thats what you're trying to say then I think I agree...

$800 month with no $$ down. I think you might be planning to lease this in Fantasy Land, no offense.

Yeah, that is what I was wondering. More like $950 pre-tax with desirable options.

AS Pros:
1) Less effort at low speed/city/parking

AS Cons:
1) Less resistance/feedback
2) Hard to predict during hard driving - when it auto counter steers while oversteering and when it changes steering ratio under acceleration after the apex
3) $$$

Cons outweight the pros for me. I wouldn't get it if I had to choose right now.

without....if you want to have a sportier feel with a TRUE relation of angle of steering wheel to ACTUAL angle of the wheels go without...plus, less stuff to fail later down the road..................
