Personally I would not want a M5 as a daily driver. Gas, insurance, repairs, etc. I am not sure of the maintenance schedule on a "m" but I think it would required more since it is a finely tuned machine as is a Porsche.
I believe my 525i is slightly underpowered. If I had it to do again I would do a 530 or 528. Turbos scare the ^%$# out of me because of the history of turbo problems. 545 or 550 I would think in hte long haul will prove more reliable than a 535i.

listen.. if your deciding between an M5 and a 911?? your a baller and i say go for it!!! spend the money! have fun every day and live it up.. and out of your WALLET!!! i would if i could.. forget practicality...

my take is that i drive so damn much for work and i hate driving a car thats not fun - it can really tire me out if its not a pleasurable/exciting drive allthe time.
if i didnt have a BMW, i'd hate life (on the road).
