Hi, i was wondering if our car happened to get stolen (God forbid), does it have tracking so we can track down where the car is?

I don't think so, if they did they would have advertised that wouldn't they?

I've heard of some other members of this forum having trackers installed on their cars but in terms of the car having it built-in? Never heard anything about it.

I think the satnav option only works for navigation purposes.

i think you need gps installed . but not in our cars . oh, wait a minute, iceman might have installed it already . my friend installed an alarm system long time ago, probably more than 10 years. the separate pager/beeper device will beep if someone breaks in, even if you are not around your car.

The car is trackable if it has BMW Assist.

NO !

The car can't be traced, not even when you have BMW Assist !!!

BMW Assist is ONLY working one way, from the car to BMW Assist! Not the other way!
They can't track it, they can't even open the door for you!

You have to install aftermarket systems, like Lojack!

And alohalc is right, I did it allready...

i know they can't open the door but is that mean we have to press the sos button in order to activate it? if so, i think it's quite silly bmw not to take a step further . it shouldn't be that hard for them to trace our cars since if we press the sos button, they know exactly where we are.

You have to press the SOS button or call them (both from inside the car of course).
They could take a step forward, but they take the privacy of their drivers very serious.
And a system what can log on to the car from the outside could be hacked... by the FBI for example... (OnStar)...

Then you only have the SOS button.

But that doesn't help you in case the car is stolen or you have forgotten the keys inside.

They can not get in contact with the car, unless the car itself, or the user inside of the car makes contact.
Therefore they can't open doors nor can they track it when it's stolen.

It's all about privacy protection...
