My Ride: 535ixT On Order: 2010 E61, Ordered 1/05, Est. Birth 3/09, Est. Delivery 4/09, Carbon Black, Cream Beige Dakota Leather, Steptronic, M-Sport Pkg., Type 135 18
Model Year: 2010
My new 535xiT has the TPMS system, as do all LCI E60/61s.
Last summer in the Colorado mountains I had a flat tire (non-Run Flat) with a 3/4 inch cut on the sidewall (don't ask me how I got it ) in my pre-LCI 530xiT. The local tireshop would/could not patch the tire, nor did they have a replacement tire. I used two cans of Fix-a-Flat and was able to drive the 200 miles to my destination (at reduced speeds) and local trips until the replacement tires arrived (the old tires were close to the end their effective life.)
What to do now? What backup system should one use after the change from run flats to normal tires?
+1 Wrecks the sensors.
Plus most wheel shops will tell you not to use fix-a-flat, and they'll also tell you that if you DO use it, they'll charge you extra to dismount, clean the fix-a-flat out, and mount a new tire. It really makes a mess inside the tire/wheel.
My understanding is that it is a chemical vulcanizing agent. It causes a chemical reaction whereby the inside of the tire is "melted", thus sealing the leak.
Or so I am told. YMMV.
Is there an alternative to Fix-a-Flat:

As for fix-a-flat  ... IF you have TPMS that's a No-No!

- I read about a Honda system . . .
- Use the donut spare, but it is only good for limited miles and gross weight . . .
- Use Fix-a-Flat and buy a new sensor . . .
- Don't drive to Colorado . . .
