Hey guys, I'm sure that this came up before, but I'm gonna ask anyways.
I'm so lost. Previously I had a 06' 525xi and now I have a 08' 535i.
Today, I got the winter tires/wheels that I used for my 06' 525xi put on the 08' 535i.
The TMPS warning light came on so I tried reseting it but didn't work.
The wheels that i'm using are non-OEM.
What should I do to get rid of the warning msg?

Thanks

Are you sure the winter wheels have TPMS in them??? Is your valve stem rubber or metal? Metal indicates TPMS.

What the TPMS does, is compare the rotational speed of all four tyres, and should one of them rotate at a different speed than the others (as would be the case in a flat tyre), it gives you a warning. You do not mention what size tyres you have on what wheels, but I can only assume that there might be a difference in size between the four tyres, which could also trigger the TPMS warning system (different size, different rotational speed).

Can you perhaps post what tyre sizes you have on what wheels, and whether they are all four of a equal brand name?

You are describing FTM, not TPMS. TPMS consists of actual monitors inside each wheel, unlike FTM which works via the above method.

That is correct.
I had a low tire pressure warning yesterday morning. The RF tire was "yellow"
I added air and the RF tire went to "green" on the idrive display.

You can add TPS to after market wheels, here is a link from Tire Rack:

WARNING! Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system that requires a sensor to be installed in the tire and wheel assembly for proper operation.

The original sensors from your original wheels can be used or you may purchase sensors from Tire Rack.
Your system includes:

433MHZ TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR
$168.00 for a quantity of 4

REQUIRED VALVE
$32.00 for a quantity of 4

Total Price: $200.00

Or check with your dealer if there is a way to disable the monitoring.

TPS is an important safety feature and I would want it to work on my car.

I stand corrected, you are right. Here in South Africa we have completely different names for the various options available, and it can sometimes get confusing on the forum to try to refer to the same thing.

For instance, FTM is called TPM (Tyre Pressure Monitor) here.

As stated before you can:

Buy TPMS for your winter set-up (tirerack.com)
Live with the error message all winter
Possibly have your dealer disable the tpm function (not sure if that's possible in the US)
You could also just have your TPM's from your summer wheels put into your winter wheels.
