Just want to make sure I understand this correctly.... From searching this topic, it sounds like you must have the TPMS installed on each tire or you will get the "TPM Malfunction" error and there is no way to reset it. Is that correct? I recently purchased a CPO '07 550i. Yesterday, I put on my aftermarket winter wheels and tires that I used on my 2004 e60 (without sensors) and promptly got the error message. I believe my 2004 e60 had the "FTM" system? In that car, I just had to reset it, when I put the summer/winter tires on.

So, do I have to learn to live with the error message or is there another way to reset it?

I still have the OEM wheels. Can I take the TPMS off of those and have them installed on the winter wheels/tires? If so, I'm assuming the tires have to be removed from the rim to get to them? Likewise, the after market tires would have to be removed to install them?

My understanding is that it cannot be reset. I wonder if that error message will fail the state inspection.

FTM works via calculation of wheel revoluations.
TPMS transmits amount of air pressure.
Two entire diff systems.

Either ride with "error," or buy used TPMS on forums for about $40 each. New cost might be as much as $70 each plus installation and rebalance. Shops will also gig you an additional $7 to $12 each for grommet for used TPMS. Not sure if new TPMS come with grommets.

If a state inspection problem, you might ber able to cover up idrive screen until you get tpms. Certainly, do not go to dealer for inspection. Also, be careful when garage tries to lift your car without knowing what they are doing (damaging???).

Good luck.

Yeah, you'll have to live with the message unless you buy or remove the sensors from your OEM wheel set-up.

What a nuisance! I'd rather have the old FTM system or nothing at all....

Anyway, thanks for the response and information.

you will probably need some new TPMS to get rid of the error

if you decide to get the sensors....make sure you take it to a reliable shop...someone who knows what they are doing....these TPMS do not come with the rubber seals...so the shop will charge you extra for their kit. and also when retightening TPMS there is a specific tightening spec and i believe it is 20 inch pounds...any more would crack the rubber seals and would cause a small leak...and you dont want that... good luck

I used 17inch e39 rims with rings on my 04 545i last year, no error. This year, I'm using 18inch ASA from 05 545i and I get the flat tire warning (doesnt say which one). Does this make sense?
