I think i 've got FTMs in the car but what concering me now is that i am upgrading the wheels in next couple of days from 18" to 19" and someones coming over to do mobile fitting the tyres on 19" wheels, so my question is if i have got FTMs do i need to have something that goes with the new wheels like in case of TPMs you have to have new sensors or working sensors on the previous wheels. please let me know asap as i dont want to pay call out charge if the fitter tells me at the last minute that i dont have certain part that goes with the wheels so the i-drive doesnt give any errors. your quick help is highly appreciated. thanks
With FTM, nothing to add. The system uses relative wheel spin speed to determine low pressure or ultimately a flat. TPMS uses sensors that would have to be placed in the new wheels, but not FTM...

Forget about TPM sensors. When your new wheels are fitted and you have the correct tyre pressures go into i Drive vehicle settings, select FTM and confirm the pressures, then select initialization, when you have driven a few miles iDrive will confirm that FTM is active.

Well, the stems are the same black rubber as the FTM, not the metal ones we have with the TPMS. As others have noted, BMW still seems to be using the FTM in Europe...

usually in the U.S. the ftm sensors have the black/plastic valve stems and tpm sensors have the metal valve stems.
US has federal mandate for some type of tire pressure warning system. Because of the obvious advantages of TPMS and because of the competition for options on expensive vehicles, most lux vehicles in US have TPMS.
