Updated: 3:22 p.m. ET April 12, 2006 TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp. said on Wednesday it is recalling 11,000 Lexus cars in Japan and 46,000 overseas to fix a faulty seat belt part.

Toyota will replace seat belts in both front seats, which can become jammed inside the holding due to a faulty part, it said.

The affected cars are Lexus GS and IS sedans.
No accidents have been reported due to the defect, it said.

Toyota, close to overtaking General Motors Corp. as the world?s No.1 seller of automobiles, has sold 15,000 Lexus GS and IS in Japan since it ushered in the 16-year-old Lexus brand to its home market in August 2005 in what it said is a major step toward taking on top luxury lines everywhere else.

It did not disclose estimated recall costs.

I don't think it costs much to Toyota. Just a spare change, but the reputation is the most important to Toyota.

This recall is not associated with a reliablility problem, just a faulty part which might not even be made by Toyota as all those parts are OEM parts made by another company. Toyota are building very reliable car in terms of engines and electronics failure as this is just another manufacturer's fault and I don't think Toyota will need to pay for this replacement at all. But still I would buy a BMW over a Toyota.

You know, the thing is people just hear the brief summary and headline during discussion and jump to conclusion
