"Best is CPO from dealer, 6yr or 100k miles in US, E60's are awesome cars but they are VERY complex. buying one without a warranty is a risk."
by this statement you mean buy a car that is CPO with that or can you atually by that much warranty on any given vehicle..

I have not had good experience with 3rd party (non BMW) warranties and refuse to use them, other have had better results.

I owned a 528 for years. I figured a 530 would be fine as it had plenty more horsepower then the older 528. I test drove a 530xi and a 550. After 1 block in the 550 my mind was made up. I had to have the V8... I haven't driven the 535 but I understand that bang for the buck (when both cars are new) it is a better value than the 550. However, I purchased my 550 CPO'd with 20k miles on it so it was an affordable option for me.

so im the market looking for my first bimmer. i have always wanted the 530xi until i discovered these forums and read about the beautiful V8 monsters..
-ive seen a couple of threads about the above mentioned comparisson and 545i always seems to be the favorite. my question is even with the higher maintanance cost, is the 545 really worth it.
-wat issues do you typically experience wit the 545 that you dont with the 530
-also when purchasing a used vehicle, can u always buy an extended warranty @ any mileage @ any given time?
-do you do a detailed inspection of the vehicle prior or after purchase(most likely before). do dealerships usually allow this?
ok thats it for now.. please feel free to throw in any additional tips u think i might need.. thanks in advance

By a CPO car, a dealer can certify the car or if you can find one private sale that was certified previously you can transfer the warranty, but I believe you have to do it in 30 days, no exceptions.

I have owned my 545 for six months now. Moved up from and E46 328CI and completely love the massive power increase. I did buy mine CPO, well worth it because if something breaks it will make a dent in the wallet. Overall, this is my 3rd bimmer and have yet to be dissapointed. I would definitely go with the V8, my bro owns a 530 and its not bad, except when I smoke him off the line.
Good luck with your choice!
