I'm getting my car chipped tomorrow, and i just thought to myself, i dont really know what torque and hp mean in real terms and how they differ.

Anyone feel like explaining it?

They're really just different sides of the exact same coin as one is directly derived from the other: HP=Torque(ft-lb)*RPM/5252

Here's an article you might find interesting, it's linked from the wikipedia entry discussing HP, I've seen it before, and it's a good summary.

Just because you can apply a fudge factor doesn't make them "the same coin".

(Horse)Power is a measure of the rate of doing work (the amount of energy transferred by a force).

Torque is a turning moment. A moment is the magnitude of force applied to a rotational system at a distance from the axis of rotation.

Yes, it does. HP is directly calculated by reference to torque and rpm.

You can calculate age by reference to radioactive half life but it doesn't make those concepts "related".

Perhaps you might have tried to help the OP, and posted something of value. As it stands, and as usual, you didn't yet you persist in posting snide little digs at those who do try and help.

Now sod off and find another thread to ruin with your pedantry.

Sorry for doing that.

A better explanation was already included in the link I posted.
