My Ride: 535D Sport Auto
Exclamation

Whilst my anorak was in the wash I was reading the test figures in Autocar Magazine and noticed they got 157mph from the 530d and only 152mph from the 535d. I sent an email to the editor (anorak now drying) saying surely there had been some mistake but he confirmed the figures were correct. However, he did add that the wind was up on the day of the 535 test (same oval track) and that BMW speed restricters can slow the car before reaching 155mph. He did add that the acceleration of the 535 only tails off after 130mph

More naff information

I also queried What Car's test figures of the 530d (0-60 in 7.8secs and top speed 143mph) sometime ago and they said that was all they got. I believe they got mixed up with the old E39. I find it hard to believe BMW would upgrade to 218bhp and only get the same performance as the old car!

Anyone done 155mph in a 535d?

A lot of it depends on how an engine is run in. If its driven harshley from day one, don't expect it to be the same as a well run in car.

My Ride: Oxford Green E60 530D with tuning box and all the toys!

Had my 530d to 160mph and still accelerating (albeit very slowly)but had to slow down. That is with a tuning box though. I can't see that running in makes any difference - it is so hard to thrash these engines unless you deliberately keep it in low gear and kick down modes all the time.

I tried out a 535D sport the other day. From a standstill it delivered its power in a much smoother curve but 0 - 60 was no different from mine. All performance differences were due to the sports configuration. So, in a straight line, mine was much quieter and more comfortable. Didn't try it much over 100 mph, so no comment on the extreme top end. But it is limited, so I guess that would have to be disabled to compete!

At that speed you really appreciate how much power you need just to get the next mph out of it - and the road needs to be so long and you need to see so far ahead!

160 mph sounds good fun! How many OAP holiday makers did you have stuck to the bonnet afterwards!

What 0-60 times did you get from both then?

And to be fair, surely you'd have to compare either 2 standard cars, or two chipped cars. I've driven a standard 530d back to back with my 535d and there was no doubt which was quicker!

I'm expecting to test drive DMS Automotive's 535d remapped demo car, that Autocar figured at 0-60 in 5.5s with a view to getting this done asap. If you'd like to do a 535d v 530d test then, I'm sure we could meet up.... at Santa Pod maybe?
