Dr,
I am massive fan of BMW diesel engines (I drive one), but when it come down to V8 vs 'striaght' 6 (Not V6), all 545i drivers will tell you, there is no contest, V8 all the way. They are much, much more refined. Rather than diesel clatter. Diesels are getting there but not a patch on gasolines.
PS I do think the 535d was dissadvantaged in the wet, can't get all that power to the road. Top gear need to do a rerun in the dry.

diesel "clatter"?? check the video out, the diesel is quieter.

as you say if you ask 545 drivers
![Laughing](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/laughing.gif)
please dont confuse the 535 and the 530d as being one and the same, i have both, and there very different animals in there power delivery.
that "extra" turbo makes all the difference.
you say that diesels are "not a patch on gasolines" ?? tell that to the le mans 24 hour winners of the last 2 years....diesels i think
![Tongue](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/tongue.gif)
tell that to the green party...
tell that to the MPG brigade
i think its the other way around, and petrol engines are not a patch on diesels, for power (torque) economy, longevity, and "tuneability" they are the way forward, even porsche now have a diesel (im seriously thinking about buying one)
look at all the big powerfull engines out there...there all diesels/marine/plant/truck etc.

this is always a good topic 545 drivers and 535D :-)
the 535 would be a cheaper engine toget more BHP from, we would just have to super charger our 545 lol!

I think we flogged this horse to death about three years ago...
The benefits of diesel engines are due solely to turbocharging. Take the turbos away, and diesel engines have little to offer. Right now, with BMW's current powerplant lineup, the diesel engine advantages over a forced induction gasoline engine are negligible. Also, BMW diesels were certainly *not* any greener than their gasoline peers. As am example, they failed emissions tests in California that the gas engines passed with ease and thus could not be sold in the states that follow CARB, which happen to be the largest markets in the US. Changes to the diesel engine emissions with the urea injectors now address the NOx problem, but with diesel in the US at least being typically more expensive than premium gas there's little economic incentive to get a diesel.

Unless BMW make the same sized engine in Diesel and Petrol and with the same number of cylinders and turbos, only then can the comparison be fair. The petrol would probably win the BHP war, the diesel would win the torque war, and it would be very close in performance.

It'll probably be flogged again in 3 years time.

They already do
The 3 liter six-cylinder twin-turbo N54 gas engine is proving to be a phenomenal engine, and at least if not more tunable than its diesel cousin.

I assume you mean the 535i. I've never looked into that much. How does it stack up against the 535d? Assuming neither is aftermarket tuned.

It might have been a different , or closer result if the Stig had been driving it instead of Clarkson in the head to head race...
