love watching that.

i wonder why they did not do a comparrison with the 530i ??
3 ltr V 3 ltr would have better, then it would have been very pro diesel.

How would that be fair? The 530i isn't a turbo.

what does that have to do with anything?? he was not doing a comparison with turbos? it was between a diesel and petrol E60.

3ltr is the same cc,
and if your getting like that the 545 is a V8..... as opposed to our V6
so the comparison was between petrol and diesel, so the equivelent car would be the 530i as its also a 6 clyinder E60.
the turbo fact would even things up as a petrol is lighter

look at the top gear test:
545 pros. 2 extra cylinders...petrol...1,500cc more...much lighter...

i think the 535d wooped its arse with those things taken into consideration....

Sorry, I thought the 535d is turbocharged. I was just saying that if the 3.0 diesel gets to be turbocharged then a fair test of "diesel vs petrol" would have been if the 530 was also turbocharged. I think the 535i is also a 3 litre isn't it? So a 535d vs a 535i would have been better.

I'm not trying to say petrol is better, I know, I've driven a 535d. I know what a relentless torque beast it is. If I'd been able to find a low mileage one with the same spec as this 545i I eventually went for, I'd be driving one now. All the 3-5 year old 535d's I could find in germany were well over 60,000 miles. I found this 545 with only 29,000 miles on it.

If they hadn't spent the whole time cocking around sideways maybe it would have been more a proper test than a show, its the worst demonstration of going sideways in an E60 I ever saw as well, snatchy jerky inputs making the car wobble around like a pudding, true its not easy without the LSD but even I can slide in mine far more gracefully than that !!!

Dr,

I am massive fan of BMW diesel engines (I drive one), but when it come down to V8 vs 'striaght' 6 (Not V6), all 545i drivers will tell you, there is no contest, V8 all the way. They are much, much more refined. Rather than diesel clatter. Diesels are getting there but not a patch on gasolines.

PS I do think the 535d was dissadvantaged in the wet, can't get all that power to the road. Top gear need to do a rerun in the dry.
