First:
My car has gone to sleep two days ago, the I Drive screen is blank, the eject buttons for the DVD and CD slot does not work, No sound from the stereo, no blue tooth connection, no phone etc. etc.
It all started two days ago; I started up the car with key (as always) in my pocket, placed my kid in the backseat, turned on the CD with her favorite artist, and walked away to my house to lock the front-door (5 meters)
Then, when I walked away, I heard that the CD stopped, and when I returned to the car, the usual message with the Key missing symbol was there, and the I Drive screen rebooting. After a couple of minutes, the screen seemed to be normal, but a caution message with " a car on a lift" (Service?) in the info display appeared. Still no sound from the stereo and a couple of reboots, and two messages were lit: SOS not working and the above mentioned, "car on a lift".
I called BMW and they told me that "This is a software problem, and we do have so much trouble with the existing CIP, so you have to wait to the 19. of march" Hmm. everything has worked flawlessly until now, I said I expected it to be hardware related, maybe the CCC unit? But what do I know.
So, nothing works, and I have always wondered about the SOS / Assist and Online function, and if it worked here in scandinavia, so I turned of my phone and decided to try (since the info system told me that among other things, SOS function is not working! and neithe the blue tooth.
I pushed the SOS button, the green indicator light comes on, all interior lights turns on, and some electronic sounds from the area under the steering column is audible. I can clearly hear some noise, like the pause when you listen to radio, and no one speaks. Then I can hear a German voice far far away, but the quality is so poor/ weak, so I can not hear if it is an answering machine or a human, then the signal LOUD! that the call has been ended PIP PIP PIP, then it starts dialing again, this time to the local emergency number (in Europe 110)
This time I can hear the police officer in the other end as clear as a normal hands free call. I apologies to him, and tell him I am sorry for the inconvenience, and he hangs up.
The question is: How can this happen? And where is this unit situated? The SIM-card?
I double checked my call list in both my "normally" blue tooth connected phone, and the one in the armrest, nothing.
Anyone?
Best regards

There is a SIM installed in your car. Its used for BMW Assist and/or SOS.

I believe this is exactly what the SOS button is supposed to do, first attemp to call BMW assist, if it cannot reach BMW assist, it is supposed to dial the local/national emergency number.

Actually I called from my car for a week ago when I tried out the Online system, and the message was"No SIM card installed", call customer service, and I did: "Sorry these services is not available or working outside Germany, (and Belgium,Netherlands I think)

Just curious, but does anyone subscribe to the "concierge" service they provide? If so, how often do you actually use it?

I thought that BMW Assist was able to run remote diagnostics on the car - true or not? When I had my check engine light on recently I tried it out and they said all they can do is call the dealer for me.

You could set it up so that this is possible, but currently the system can't.
Just as stolen vehicle recovery is not possible outside the USA...
The system itself can be configured to do a lot of extra stuff. But they are holding back the possibilities...
