I have a 53-plate 530i. I have never had TMC working in the UK, but recently visited France. As soon as I drove off the ferry it began to work without me having to do a thing! I hav since found out that a signla is broadcast in the UK by Classic FM. Therefore, how come it picks the signal up in France but not in the UK?

Can any body help because I would like to get this feature working?

Have you checked that TMC is set to Auto?

You can also select manually the TMC broadcaster (in the UK, only Classic FM, so rather useless, but that does not prevent it having been set to something else at some point).

Just for curiousity, could you please explain your plate system?

You wrote that you have "a 53-plate".

I know it has something to do with your UK cars MY's???

UK number plate system used to be on an annual basis, with a single letter as age identifier. The registration year used to run from 1.sept to 31.August the next year. So e.g. P123ABC meant (P) the car was first registered between 1.9.96 and 31.8.97. after R reg it changed to 6 month periods. R (09/97-08/98) S-reg 09/98-02/99 t-reg 03/99-08/99 and so on. Not all letters were used. When they finished after Y (03/2001-08/2001) the changed to a system with 2 regional letter identifiers (theoretically) and used numbers to identify the registration. So e.g. BU51NSZ was in vicinity of Birmingham and 51 meant second half of 2001 reg's. It then went on 02 and 52 for 2002 first and second half 03 and 53 for 2003 first and second half and so on. 53 reg is registered between 09/2003 and 02/2004.

Confused ?

Before the older prefix letter registration, the age identifier was at the end of the reg. e.g. ABC123R

Sounds like you need a software update. I have a 53 plate 530dA with business nav and from memory TMC function was added with one of the early software updates of which I have had several. The first dealt with rough change from 2nd to 1st then one to activate BFD... that also needed a new bit of firmware and then one to add MP3 and so on . I am currently running on CIP v23.x

Hi,

do you have Sat Nav?

Not sure if this helps you but I had an 03 plate 330 with professional sat nav and TMC didn't work at all to start with. It was because the car came with a CD nav disc or so they said.

So I bought the DVD disc that covered Europe and sure enough TMC sprung into life...

Good luck!

Chris.

If you have profesional Nav, do you have the Perspective view ?

With my May 2004 version the TMC didn't work - and the dealer eventualy admitted the software wouldn't work and had to wait till early 2005 for the software upgrade which fixed it. The Nav was improved at the same time, with the perspective screen

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I think I have it set up okay so it sounds like I need a software update. I will hassle the dealer to look at this!
