just bought oem m5 166 rims and the 255/40 is rubbing up front....dealer will take them back. Now just to confirm, I need to buy a 245/35/19 correct? Not 245/40/19. do both work?

Why is the stock M5 sold with 255/40 and 285/35 when it appears most of you use245/35 and 275/30.

BTW, the 285/35 on the rear work well, no rubbing.

Thanks!

Apparently, the M5s have more room in the wheel well. I suppose BMW did this to fit bigger rubber to a more powerful car. Therefore the bigger tires all around for a larger contact patch.

And yes... the 285/35R19 tires in the rear will work without rubbing if you have the 166 M wheels with the M5 ET 28 offset.

As for the 5 Series that are not of M caliber, the factory recommended size for a staggered set of wheels/tires is 245/35R19 for the front and 275/30R19 for the rear. This avoids any potential rubbing of tires to car body parts and retains the original factory set wheel/tire diameter to keep the speedometer accurate to factory settings.

Here is a tire size calculator that you can use to find the proper size tire for any car.

M5 fenders are wider...hence the different tire size...

Glad to hear your 285's fit, rub free...

Shouldn't be a problem.

Not a problem from a rubbing standpoint, but the circumferences of the rear tires won't be ideal. The rear tire will be a bit taller than the front one, hence the use of the 275/30 in the rear. And it could affect your speedo, however the speedometers aren't accurate now, so yours will probably be MORE accurate in actuality with the bigger 285's.

It's also a looks issue...with higher rubber on rears vs. front. I am sure it will look fine, though...maybe even better.

245/35 + 275/30 is the OEM sizes for 19" staggered on non-M5's. However, as your 285's are working fine just put on the 245/35's...
