Still considering what rims to get for my car, and some people says the 17's look to small. So I went to tire track and put in all of the various tire sizes and then lookedin the specs for the diameter. I know I don't have a real life. My findings were as follows:
1. The diameter of the 17 tires was the same as the 18's, and depending on the tire, sometimes even bigger.
2. Not all of the same size tries have the same diameter, depends upon the brands
3. The diameter is about 26 inches
4. So my question is then if all of thwe tires are the same size, then why di peopel say the 17's are too small?

They say that because their opinion is that the wheel size looks small relative to the tire size. Whenever you increase or decrease wheel sizes you have to keep the tire size the same so as not to affect the stability control, ABS, and speedometer readings that are all calibrated for a certain size tire. So, as you increase the size of the wheel, the size of the sidewall gets smaller or has a lower profile so to speak. The lower the profile, generally, the better the car will handle and the rougher it will ride. And, it most peoples opinion, the better it looks.

Thats my opinion.

Right, tires smaller and wheels bigger. Overall, many think the result looks better.

I think 18 still looks kinda small... 19"s would be best on the E60

The outside diameter of a tire depends on the wheel size and tire aspect ratio. Here's an online calculator that will help you determine the OD of a tire:

As long as you maintain aspect ratios, wheel DESIGN has far more to do with appearance than the 1" difference. I just put 235 45 17" shows and wheels on my 545 iS and see little difference, EXCEPT for the more narrow spokes, that make the whole wheel assembly look more delicate. Height-wise though, they aren't enough different, to my eye, to talk about. But then they are snow tires that only live there for 4-5 mos. but I was concerned about ground clearance for upstate NY snow.

Wheel design obviously is important, but, other things equal, many, including me, think that a size up, for example, looks significantly better. Also, IMO, even an inch of tire diameter can make a great deal of difference to looks even overcoming the beauty of an otherwise good-looking wheel/tire combo. I experimented with putting an inch smaller diameter wheels/tires on an RX-7 once to effectively lower the rear-end ratio, and the car just looked silly.
