Comparing one tyre make to another isnt a fair comaprison Conti sport contacts have softer tread compound to PS2 so it means nothing. Wheel position doesnt suddenly stop wearing a tyre because you have rotated it, your just wearing the same rubber from another tyre. In fact a tyre that has bedded in on another position will wear more until its bedded into the new position and the whole tyre has proper contact again.
Cam you define bedding?? Im assuming that means "breaking in?" Not that Im comparing tyres, but the change in tyre life is pretty impressive. Are you saying the Conti's dont wear as well?

isn't 545i tires staggered? hw are you suppose to rotate it? left to right?
You can rotate a staggered set up car as well, however you have have the tires unmounted and remounted on the opposite rim. I am not totally sure it would be worth it for the front, but I plan on doing my rears for sure since the camber on a BMW is so negative, it will just eat the insides of a tire on the rears, so its a good way to extend the life another 10K miles or so. For me thats over a year of driving.

By bedding i mean that the tyre wears to the geometry of the wheel position its fitted to i.e. camber, toe in etc. So the tyre tread its not perfectly flat once its been used as its settled to that wheel position and wear habit. I have no experiance of the PS2 but from what ive read they seem to last longer than OEM Sportcontact 2s people have changed off their cars(at least on the Audi forums I visit).

I understand if you have negative camber swapping them to counteract wear but then you may as well put harder tyres on in the first place as you reduce you grip the whole time the face of the tread isnt making total contact with the road(which can be a few thousand miles).

Thanks to all for the feedback. I will be rotating in the next week or so. In my past experience with other cars, I always rotated and I do believe it increased tire life. Just wanted to make sure it applied to the BMW.

I have so much to learn about the BMW!!

Thanks,
B

with the almost perfect 50/50 weight ratio, it shouldnt be needed in our cars.

I currently have staggered, unidirectional tires, so no rotating. I did not rotate the tires on my e46, even though I easily could have, but managed to maintain pretty even tire wear. It may depend on how you drive. GL.

I never get why people rotate tyres, I know its rather popular in the states but no where else really seems so big on it. All i can see it does is spread the life of tyre wear across all four tyres. It must unsettle the car somewhat as each tyre on the car will have bedded in to the suspension geometry on that corner then you take the tyre and move it to another wheel with totally different geo. The tyre now isnt even a new tyre bedding in it can be one with a totally oposite tread wear to the wheel its now fitted to(effectively reducing the tyres performance for some time). Its not like the tyres are ever going to age and perish if they are left in their current position and the only down side is that you may have to change the drive tyres slightly sooner but over all your still buying the same amount of tyres in the long run.

Im not bashing anyone who does rotate I just personally dont see what the benefit is.
For one thing, it'a a free service offered by my tire vendor. In addition to improving the life span of the tire, I would think that it does not allow the wheel nuts to "meld" into the hub. I've heard of many people shearing their nuts when removing a tire after long periods of time. I have never experienced this as the nuts have been removed every 5,000 miles.

Glad I read this. Nobody wants sheared nuts! Better jerk them off tonight!
